Child language development: from parental concern to an assessment plan

“My child understands everything but says very little” starts a conversation; it does not settle it. Concrete examples help: asking for help, following an unfamiliar instruction, telling a story or joining a game. They make the concern more specific than a general developmental label.

Developmental language disorder can affect understanding and using language. Assessment requires professional expertise; a word count alone cannot describe the profile. Hearing and the language environment matter. Learning several languages does not itself indicate a disorder.

We consider a digital record as a timeline of observations: who noticed something, under which conditions and when. A family account, a session recording and a professional conclusion should retain their provenance. An automated summary must not turn a parental hypothesis into an established diagnosis.

For developmental and speech-language specialists, a task profile is more informative than a broad label: understanding instructions, constructing an utterance and participating in dialogue. An interface can connect observations to tasks and their conditions while preserving the child’s strengths.

Our research question concerns whether AI can organise these examples faithfully. An error in recognising a child’s speech may resemble an error made by the child. Source audio and transcription must therefore remain distinct, with interpretations reviewed by a professional.

The family should leave with an understandable account of what was clarified, what needs further assessment and how progress will be discussed. Comparisons need comparable observations. A polished chart cannot replace an individual conclusion and an agreed support plan.
